When not to follow (AI) design trends

You may have seen on your feeds recently a lot of people & brands taking part in the ‘AI doll’ trend & it’s something I wanted to open a discussion about today. What are your thoughts on this?

For me personally it seems just one more step in the direction of people defaulting to the ‘easy’ way of things, but creativity isn’t something that comes so easily. Many of us have fought over many years to achieve even a modicum of success in the creative industry. It doesn’t feel at all the correct use for AI, especially for us, when this is something we as creatives can make ourselves, in our own style. Thankfully I have seen so many incredible responses in our community from “real human artists” using #StarterPackNoAI who have created their own versions, rejecting the AI trend & celebrating what the human touch can do. There is a great article on Creative Boom with some beautiful examples.

This isn’t to say that AI doesn’t have its place. But my thinking is it should be here to help us with the boring day-to-day admin of our lives & not as a replacement for our creative thinking & practice. I also think it is worth considering the environmental impact that just one use of using AI tools can produce. What do you think?

What I find that AI IS useful for:

  • Helping create ideas & starting points for newsletter titles or social media captions
  • Crating ideas & starting points for social media posts & videos
  • Making transcripts for meetings
  • Editing photography e.g. expanding the image beyond it’s original size or removing tricky backgrounds
